Empowering communities against online hate

Project Overview

Online platforms, while connecting the world, have also become fertile ground for hate speech. Our client identified a critical challenge: the unchecked spread of antisemitic content, often going unreported or unaddressed. Existing social media reporting mechanisms were largely ineffective, with only 10% of reported antisemitic content removed and users rarely receiving responses. This systemic lack of transparency meant crucial data on online hate trends was lost.

Our client's clear vision was to empower European Jewish communities with a robust, user-friendly platform for reporting online hate, and to leverage this data to foster collaboration with legislative bodies and social media platforms in the fight against online antisemitism.

The Challenge: A Disconnected and Ineffective Reporting Landscape

The core problems our client faced, and which we aimed to solve, were multifaceted:

  • Low Removal Rates: Only 10% of antisemitic content reported is taken down by platforms.
  • Lack of Feedback: Reporters rarely receive acknowledgment or updates.
  • Data Silos & Opacity: Critical insights are lost within platform ecosystems.
  • Absence of a Centralized Tool: No unified reporting system for Jewish communities.

Our Approach: A Comprehensive, User-Centric Development Journey

To address these challenges, we embarked on a strategic, multi-phase development process:

  1. Thorough Market Research: We began with extensive market research, analyzing existing hate reporting mechanisms and other reporting platforms to understand best practices, identify gaps, and inform our solution design.
  2. Collaborative Discovery Workshop: A crucial two-day workshop with the client allowed us to deeply understand the target audience (European Jewish communities), map out intricate user flows, and rapidly prototype quick mockups for the most critical application screens. This ensured alignment and a shared vision from the outset.
  3. Cross-Platform Solution Design: The overarching goal was to create a seamless, unified experience across multiple platforms. Our solution encompassed:
    • A dedicated website for comprehensive reporting and resource access.
    • A browser extension compatible with all modern browsers, enabling quick and direct reporting from any webpage.
    • Native Android and iOS mobile applications for on-the-go reporting, ensuring accessibility and ease of use for all users.
  4. Robust Administrative Backend Development: To facilitate the client's crucial work with reported data, we developed a sophisticated administrative backend. This system, designed like a CRM, allows users from different communities to review, manage, and update the status of incoming reports, providing transparency and actionable insights.

The Solution: HO:PE - Hate Online: Preparedness and Empowerment

The result of our collaborative effort is HO:PE, a powerful and intuitive platform that provides a uniform, consistent interface across all digital touch points and screen sizes. HO:PE empowers Jewish communities by:

  • Simplifying Reporting: Offering an easy and consistent way to report antisemitic content, regardless of the platform or device.
  • Ensuring Action: Providing a clear pathway for reported data to be collected, analysed, and used in direct engagement with legislative bodies and social media platforms.
  • Building a Data-Driven Understanding: Aggregating data on hate trends, enabling a clearer picture of the evolving landscape of online antisemitism and informing strategic responses.
  • Facilitating Collaboration: The administrative backend acts as a central hub for community members to manage reports and work together, fostering a sense of shared purpose and accountability.

Impact & Future Outlook: Positive Change in Motion

The initial rollout of HO:PE has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from Jewish communities. This immediate positive reception validates our user-centric design and development approach.

As we continue to roll out the product, our commitment remains strong: to actively engage with users, gather their feedback, listen to their ideas, and continuously improve HO:PE. Our ultimate aim is to create a powerful tool that significantly contributes to overcoming the growing tide of online hate, fostering safer digital spaces for all.

This project exemplifies Evermore's expertise in delivering complex, multi-platform digital solutions that address critical societal needs. We are proud to have partnered with our client to bring HO:PE to life, empowering communities and driving meaningful change in the fight against online hate speech.
